His given name was Jesse Archie Clement, a son of James Archibald Clement and Agnes Ann Work, he came to Florida about 1925. He was a city attorney for 25 years, served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1937-1949, and was an uncle to Frank Clement, Governor of Tennessee for two terms, 1953-1958 and 1963-1967.

At his funeral, former Florida Governor Fuller Warren, led the honorary pallbearers.
