Born in Henry County August 1, 1853; son of Aaron and Christian ( Buchanan ) Clements. Schooling limited to fourteen days in one - room school near Big Sandy. Married first October 30, 1877, to Sallie Stockdale of Benton County; children -- Luetta, Martha Caroline, Chloe Dell, Donna Belle, William A., James N., Sherman, and John Weaver; after death of first wife, married December 24, 1899, to Agnes ( Work ) Shipp, native of Dickson County and widow of J.A. Shipp of Hickman County; she died in 1913; children -- Robert S., Jesse A., James Malcolm, and Ida Agness; following death of second wife, married to Florence Kellam of Pegram Station, Cheatham County, daughter of William W. and Georgia ( Hamilton ) Kellam. No children. In his earlier years, Senator Clement worked on farm and in tanyard; operated blacksmithing and wagon - making business at age of twenty - two; return to farm. Began study of law at age of thirty - eight; read law in office of former Governor Tom C. Rye at Camden, Benton County; practiced law at Camden to 1903; removed to Dickson, Dickson County, and continued practice of profession; president, 1911, Citizens Telephone Co.; attorney for Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway in Dickson County. Member Methodist Episcopal Church, South; superintendent of Sunday school more than forth years; member Free and Accepted Masons; Knights of Pythias. Died at Dickson, May 28, 1933; buried in Union Cemetery, Dickson. Grandfather of Governor Frank Goad Clement; cousin of T.N. Clement, sometime member Tennessee General Assembly.
