U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Moving to America, he learned the printing trade and published a newspaper. He studied medicine, graduated from the Cincinnati Medical Institute in 1858 and practiced medicine and surgery, in Concord, New Hampshire. Entering politics, he was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1872-73), a member of the New Hampshire State Senate, (1878-80) and New Hampshire Surgeon General, (1879-80). In 1885, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, serving until 1889. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 1891 and serving until his death at age 81.
