Death of Dr. Henry U. Upjohn—A Most Valuable and Respected Citizen Called Hence—An Old Pioneer Departs.
Our people were greatly shocked Sunday evening to hear of the death of Dr. Henry U. Upjohn, which occurred at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon. He was taken ill two weeks ago last Thursday with typhoid fever. From the first the doctor was despondent and seemed to feel that he would never get well. This may have been owing to the fact that he had never before been sick, never giving up a day to illness in his life. Although he had the best of medical attendance and was closely watched and ministered to, the dread disease, typhoid fever, closed about him and he sank in spite of all—a careful life, a fine physique, the best of habits and a thorough acquaintance with all the preservatives of health.
Henry Upjohn was the eldest son of Dr. Uriah Upjohn, the veteran physician of this county, and was born in Richland township July 22,1843. His education was finished at the university of Michigan in 1871. In the spring of 1871 Dr. Upjohn opened an office in this city and it was not long before he had an excellent and extensive practice. In December, 1872, he married Miss Millie Kirby, the eldest daughter of W. G. Kirby of Kalamazoo, who, the same year that the doctor graduated at Ann Arbor, graduated at the Michigan female seminary in the this place. Subsequently she took a full medical course at the university. Mrs. Upjohn and five boys survive Dr. Upjohn, a daughter having died two years ago. His father, three brothers and four sisters also survive him.
In the decease of Dr. Upjohn Kalamazoo has lost one of her most valued citizens, for as a young man he has developed a genius for enterprise rarely witnessed of young men of his age engaged with professional business. With firm faith in the growth of Kalamazoo, he early invested in property and took a lively interest in business matters. He purchased a large tract in the north part of this city and was the first in that section to improve the marsh for celery land. He, too, was one of the first shippers of celery to other places. In 1882 he began the Burdick street boom by converting the premises (he owned and had for some time made his home and office) on Burdick street into the site of the large and handsome brick block which is known as the Upjohn block. This proved a success from the start. The doctor, however, did not stop a t this, but invested in other enterprises, all of which had success in them. The largest and greatest of these was the Pill and Granule company which, in connection with his brother William, was growing into an establishment of national fame.
As a citizen, professional man, neighbor, — as husband, father and friend—in all the relations of life, Dr. Upjohn was among the best, and he had begun a career which would have resulted in great good to Kalamazoo and made his name famous throughout the country, for he was a man of push, of resources, untiring energy, and with purposes of the highest order.
His loss is one which will be regretted by hosts of people and his family and kindred have the hearty sympathy of all.
The funeral will be held at the house on Wednesday forenoon at ten o'clock.
Mrs. Kirkland, who is in the south for her health has been telegraphed not to undertake the journey, which is a very severe one for her at this time of life, and would not be safe for her to undertake. Kalamazoo Daily Telegraph January 3, 1887 page 7
