Seth Duncan was born in what today is Berkeley County, West Virginia, but at the time of his birth was still a part of Frederick County, Virginia, soon to be called Berkeley County, Virginia. He was the son of Matthew and Sarah Duncan. He married 25 Dec 1792 in Frederick County, Virginia, Ruahanna Henshaw daughter of William Henshaw and Agnes (Ann, Nancy) Anderson, a prominent landowner in Berkeley County, "Captain Wm. Henshaw was one of the most active agents in having the county of Berkeley established in 1772." "Genealogy of West Virginia Families," 1901-1905 (Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Publishing, 1992), p. 62. Seth and Ruahanna lived in Berkeley County until about 1796 when they emigrated to Pendleton County, Kentucky on the Licking River. He brought his mother, Sarah Duncan to his home in Pendleton County, from Bourbon County where she had previous lived with her son, James. A deed of gift from Sarah Duncan Greer Bell (his sister) dated 24 Feb 1808 lists the names of the children of Seth and Ruahanna Henshaw Duncan: Matthew J. Duncan who married 18 Dec 1817 Nelson County, Kentucky, Mary Miller, and lived in Larue County, Kentucky; Seth Duncan Junior who married 29 Apr 1823 Nelson Co., Kentucky, Jane Carter; Elizabeth Ann Duncan who married 13 Aug 1830 Nelson County, Kentucky John Protsman, and Sarah Maria Duncan who is believed to have died young. The name Protsman is often referred to as Troutman. He is listed in the 1880 Nelson County, Kentucy census with his second wife, Martha Burns/Burnes.
More recent research indicates that Seth and Ruhannah Duncan lived until after 1822 Nelson Co., KY deeds,15-296 17 Nov 1821 Seth Duncan and wife Ruhama to Edmond Martin both of Nelson Co., KY $436, 218 acres on N side of Rolling Fork part of Duncan's 600 acres survey patent in name of John Summers. adj. Bank of Rolling Fork, Samuel Gardiner's 400 acre survey, both signed. Wit: Wm. Martin, Matthew Greenwell, Seth Duncan Jr. FHL 483, 130.
