Sarah Duncan was the child of Matthew and Sarah Duncan of Frederick County, Virginia, which is now Berkeley County, West Virginia or born in Franklin County Pennsylvania since the first recorded purchase of land for Matthew in Frederick County is in 1751. She married about 1773 Charles Greer, (also spelled Grier, Greear). Some researchers have her born in 1760 but that would have made her too young for his military career. Charles Greer served as the surgeon's mate in the Fourth Virginia Regiment in the Revolutionary War (taken prisoner at Brandywine, rejoined his regiment in 1777, transferred to the Third Virginia Regiment in 1780). "Revolutionary War Records of Virginia," Section IV. In a deed recorded in Book 9, p. 190 Berkeley County, (West) Virginia, "Charles Grier, William Grier, and others made conveyance." Sarah Grier, in 1790, gave power of Attorney to Thomas Duncan (probably her brother Thomas) to recover bonds and monies owing to the estate of Charles Grier." She inherited hundreds of acres of land from her first husband Charles Greer on the "Big Barren River". She married William Bell, a widower with one son, William Bell Jr. They were caught up in a dispute over property her brother Joseph Duncan's wife Ann Marie McLaughlin Duncan Moore and her children claimed that Sarah Bell had promised them. The suit lasted until 1808, when she deeded the last of the property in Bourbon County, to the children of her brother Seth Duncan. William Bell Junior died in 1819. Barren County, Kentucky Will Books 1800-1824 Book 2, p. 37 William Bell Jr. leaves his estate to his step-mother Sarah Bell, and his two sisters: Fannie Roberts, and Elizabeth Bell; witness David Logan and James Dodd Jr, probate October court 1819 Barren County, Kentucky. This part of Barren County was made into Warren County, for by 1830 Ardemas D. Roberts and his wife Fannie are in Warren County. Frances Angeline Bell married 12 Dec 1805 Ardimus D. Roberts, (spelled several different ways). Elizabeth Bell is possibly the one who married 28 Jun 1827 Barren County, Kentucky, Zachariah Hopson; surety A. D. Roberts. "Marriage Records of Barren County, Kentucky 1799-1849" by Martha Powell Reneau, p. 133. 1810 Mason County, Kentucky, Mays Lick twp, roll 7 p. 300 image 313, Ardemas Roberts, one male under 10; two males 26-44 (him and Wm. Bell Jr?) two females under 10 years, two females 26-44 (his wife Fannie and her sister Elizabeth Bell?) one female over 45, (his mother or Sarah Bell?). She is also believed to be the mother of Emily Bell (born 10 May 1797) who married James Dodd, but the ages don't fit with her statement that her husband William Bell died in 1794. Sarah Duncan Greer Bell is believed to have died before 1832 in Glasgow, Kentucky but may have died in Warren County.
