James Duncan was the son of Matthew and Sarah Duncan. He traveled with several other pioneers along "Boone's Trace" with his father-in-law John Strode from Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia) in March 1779. They built a stockade around the cabin that Strode erected in 1776 along a tributary of the south fork of the Licking River, about two miles from Winchester in Clark County, Kentucky. It was called Strode's Station. Duncan returned with his family in 1784. In Bourbon County, KY he lived along Kennedy's Creek on the Winchester Road. Sources: Mrs. W. B. Duncan who married John "Jack" Grigsby; Eleanor Duncan who married Eddy Lynn Breckenridge; Stephen Duncan who married Lucy Browning; and Jones Duncan who apparently died young.
