Joseph Duncan was the son of Matthew and Sarah Duncan. Matthew had property in Franklin Co., PA and in Frederick Co., VA which is now Berkeley Co., WV. His brother James emigrated to Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1779 and settled with his family in 1784. "In depositions contained in old Bourbon County suits, Joseph Duncan stated that he 'made several trips from Virginia to the Kentucky territory' before he took up his permanent residence in 1788'" Mrs. W. B. (Julia Spencer) Ardery, "The Duncan's of Bourbon County, Kentucky (Lexington, Kentucky: W. S. Welch Printing, 1943), pp. 11-12. Joseph Duncan married about 1780 probably in Frederick County, VA Ann Marie McLaughlin. Joseph served in the Seventh Virginia Reg. in the Revolutionary War from 1776-1778. At the time he settled in Kentucky this was a part of Fayette County, see Fayette County, Kentucky Deed Book 3, p. 52, 400 acres on a branch of the Licking River; Bourbon County, Kentucky Deed Book B, p. 83, he obtained 500 acres on Doctor's Fork, 23 Jun 1789. He received 750 acres in Barren County, from James McLaughlin who was possibly his father-in-law. Bourbon County Court 11 Jun 1802. He deeded this property to his brother James Duncan. Joseph Duncan the elder built the "Duncan Tavern," in Paris, which is still standing across from the county courthouse. His family moved to Illinois early in the 19th Century when it was mostly wilderness. His son Joseph Duncan Jr. served in the U. S. Congress and was governor of Illinois (1834-1837).
