ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – State Sen. Alfonso Montoya, 46, brother of US Sen. Joseph Montoya, D-N.M., died Sunday in a one-car accident 19 miles north of Albuquerque on Interstate 25. State police said Montoya and a woman identified as Leonella Trujillo, 42, of Albuquerque, were southbound on the highway when the car went out of control and flipped over two or three times.
Strong-Thorne Mortuary said a Rosary is scheduled at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Palm Chapel at the mortuary, and Mass will be celebrated at ID a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo.
Montoya, representing Rio Arriba and Sanoval counties and a portion of Bernalillo County, was third in seniority in the New Mexico Senate and was next in line for chairmanship of the powerful Legislative Finance Commitee. After serving in the New Mexico House, he was elected to the Senate in 1961.
