State Sen. Ted Montoya, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has died of an apparent heart attack. Funeral arrangements were pending. Montoya, 44, was dead when rescue officials arrived at his apartment about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, said Lt. Ray Carrillo of the Albuquerque Fire Department. He said the manager of the apartments had been asked to check on Montoya after he failed to show up for a visit with relatives.
Montoya was the brother of the late U.S. Sen. Joseph Montoya, D-N.M.The state senator was a Democrat from Sandoval, Rio Arriba, and Bernalillo counties. He had been named to the Senate to replace his brother Alfonso T. Montoya when he died in 1973. His brother Tom O. Montoya died in 1975 of a stroke. Ted Montoya was serving his first year as chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
