Clarence worked as an electronics specialist with the U.S. Navy. Eventually his federal civilian work would take him and his family to the western Pacific and the U.S.Territory of Guam in Micronesia about 4000 miles southwest of Hawaii. Among other tasks with the navy his knowledge in electronics would enable him to work on the 'gyro' an important instrument used in nautical navigation aboard ships.

Clarence was born in a large family in Honouliuli on the dry Ewa coast of leeward Oahu island, Hawaii. He was the sixth son of eleven adult children of Mr. and Mrs. Sen Ching. In October of 1933 at the age of 22, Clarence would leave Honolulu on the steamship, "Empress of Canada", on an Orient trip with his parents and two younger siblings, Walter and Elsie. Clarence would return to Honolulu during the following spring of 1934 to live and work. Elsie would return in 1935.

Clarence had an outgoing personality much like his first wife Marjorie Pearl Harrington of Texas who was known for her expressive and outward personality. During their marriage they adopted two young boys. One was Robert and the other Tim. Robert, the oldest was given the middle name of 'Sen' as in his grandfather Ching Sen's name and Tim the middle name of 'Loy' as in Clarence's Chinese name.
