Fanny Ching was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sen Ching. She married her husband Henry Tai Mau twice, once in western fashion in July 1937 and earlier at age 19 in October 1918 under Chinese custom. She lived in Waipahu, a sugarcane mill community, on the island of Oahu with her young family near a hospital not far from the sugar mill. In 1937, Fanny traveled to China for a visit of several months on the ocean vessel, "Empress of Japan", where her mother and father and youngest brother Walter were residing after leaving the U.S. Territory of Hawaii in October of 1933. Her younger brother Arthur had made a similar voyage to China previously in 1935. Fanny's voyage like her brother Arthur's had ports of call in Yokohama and Shanghai. Back then it took from 12 to 15 days for the trans-Pacific trip from Vancouver, Canada via the Hawaiian Islands to reach the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong with the gaining of a day traveling west across the International Dateline.
