On December 4, 1907, a son, Philip Irving, was born in rural Brandon, Minnesota to Peter and Ina (Olson) Hanson. He attended country school in Urness Township and then began learning the welding trade at Smith's Welding in St. Paul.

Philip and Hazel Nelson were united in marriage on October 16, 1937. The couple lived in Minneapolis. Philip used his welding skills during WWII when he was stationed with the U.S. Navy in New Guinea. He then returned to Minneapolis and was employed by Bros Boilers. He later worked as a maintenance specialist for the St. Louis Park Schools. He retired in 1972 and moved to the Moe Woods on Lake Williams in Moe Township six years later. Since 1981, Philip and Hazel have been residents of Alexandria. He was a former member of Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park and a charter member of Shalom Lutheran in Alexandria. Philip had many interests and abilities including carpentry and gardening. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid Twins fan.

Philip died at the Douglas County Hospital on September 29, 1996. He was 88 years of age. His parents, three brothers: Axel, Howard and Hans, and two sisters: Selma Larson and Stella Michaelson preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Hazel of Alexandria; daughters: Barbara and husband Ronald Anderson of Tonka Bay; Pauline and husband Ellwood Holseth of Anoka; sister, Ina Sanders of Hoffman; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held October 2, 1996 at Shalom Lutheran Church with Rev. Matthew Smuts officiating. Interment was in West Moe Lutheran Church cemetery with Leroy Sanders, Willard Sanders, Ronald Hanson, Robert Hanson, Allen Hanson and James Hanson acting as pallbearers. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.
