Raymond H. "Ray" Petzing, 93, of Effingham died at 4 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham, with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bauer Funeral Home, Effingham, with a parish wake service at 7:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Cemetery.

Mr. Petzing was born Sept. 21, 1916, in rural Altamont, the son of Edward and Alvina (Hoese) Petzing. He married Rose Marie Dust on July 24, 1948. She preceded him in death in 1996. He was operator of Wabash Independent Oil in Effingham. Ray also operated a gas station in Teutopolis for 23 years before that. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council 2874 and Effingham American Legion Post 120. He served with the Army Air Force during World War II.

Survivors include his sons, William R. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Louis A. (wife, Christine) of Galesburg; brother, Harold Petzing of Altamont; and sister, Esther Berg of Champaign. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Charles E.; one sister, Martha Engel; and a sister-in-law, Hazel Petzing.
