Virgil Dale Petzing was born December 8, 1925 the son of Edward and Alvina (Hoese) Petzing of Moccasin Township in Effingham County, Illinois. He attended the local schools and helped on the family farm.
Dale entered service in the Navy in 1943 during his Senior year in high school. He served in the Pacific Theater.
Beecher City Journal (June 22, 1944)
"Dale, the son of Edward and Alvina (Hoese) Petzing of near this city, was called to service last fall (1943) after he had started his senior year in the local high school. He is taking amphibious, the roughest and toughest training in the Navy at present."
Dale did make it back home safely. He married and raised a family. Dale lived for some time in the Bradley, Illinois area.
Virgil Dale Petzing died November 1, 2001. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered by a tree planted in his honor in the state of Washington. He was proud to have served his country.
