Captain Samuel W. Mather died in the Civil War. Sam Mather was a successful sea captain who had discovered the fastest route to Australia during the gold rush days. He was one of the first to volunteer for the Union Navy in 1861 and was killed in a firefight off the coast of Florida.

He was an officer in the U.S.N. during the southern rebellion, and was killed by the rebels at Mosoulto inlet Florida while in the service of his country in command of the U.S. steamer Henry Andrews.
