Joseph and Catherine were married on October 11, 1817 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. Joseph was the son of John Mather (4-2-1746) Lyme, New London County, Connecticut ~ 10-30-1835 Lyme, New London County, Connecticut) and Hepzibah Peck (3-2-1746 Lyme, New London County, Connecticut ~ 9-27-1841 Lyme, New London County, Connecticut). Their two sons; Reverend Joseph Higgins Mather, Jr. and Captain Samuel Webb Mather were also buried in Fountain Hill Cemetery.
Joseph next married Esther M. C. Peck on October 26, 1826 in Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut. Esther and baby girl died during childbirth.
Joseph married his third wife, Sarah Selden Jewett, on August 9, 1829 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. They were the parents of:
