US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Maine's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives from 1967 until 1975. His fascination with the sea began as a builder of Liberty Ships during his teenage years, which led to his enrolling at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (with a V-12 Engineering Program), prior to serving with the US Navy during World War II. Upon returning home, he graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1947 and remained active in the Navy until 1953, as he was assigned to destroyers in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. He attained his law degree from Harvard in 1957 and practiced law in Portland later serving as counsel to the Maine Public Utilities Commission. With the guidance and encouragement of Senator Edmund Muskie, Kyros launched his political career as a candidate for Congress in 1966. During his tenure, he sponsored legislation to promote and regulate the US maritime industry, in addition to spearheading legislation for the creation of a 200-mile offshore fishing limit designed to protect the US fishing industry as well as the environment. After leaving Congress, he served in the US State Department and later resumed practicing law in Washington, D.C.
