2008 obituary. PORTLAND -- Alice W. Kyros of Portland, passed away peacefully on Feb. 14, 2008. She was predeceased by her beloved son Peter N. Kyros, Jr. and by her brother James Williams of Portland. Mrs. Kyros was born and raised in the Portland area, having graduated from Deering High School and Westbrook Junior College. She worked at the Portland Press Herald as a society reporter, at Union Mutual (now UNUM), and in her first job, as a holiday gift wrapper at Porteous, Mitchell. She was remembered as a sharp witted, vibrant woman who was generous with her time and was always ready to help those in need. She married former U.S. Representative Peter N. Kyros and, following his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy, traveled with her family as Peter was stationed at Navy bases in Charleston, S.C., Newport, R.I., and Watertown, Mass. After her husband left the service, Mrs. Kyros became active in political campaigns in Maine. In 1960, she met John F. Kennedy during a presidential campaign stop in Augusta. The moment made a lasting impression on her. She helped her husband gain a seat in Congress representing the first district of Maine for several terms. She remained active while her husband represented Maine in Congress, serving as Secretary to the Congressional Wives Caucus and supporting efforts to raise funds for the arts and the National Symphony. In Portland, she chaired a Democratic party fundraiser at the Eastland Hotel which featured a Hawaiian theme--Aloha from Maine-- to honor Representative Patsy Mink of Hawaii. In 1970, Mrs. Kyros christened a newly-minted U.S. Coast Guard ship in Casco Bay. After her return to Maine from Washington, Mrs. Kyros served as Director of Admissions at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine. She was well-loved by staff and patients. She retired to Cape Elizabeth. The family would like to thank Falmouth by the Sea and Maggie Brocard. Visitation will be at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 18 from 6-8 p.m. with a Trisagion Service at 6:30. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 133 Pleasant St. Portland. Interment will be in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.
