2009 obituary. George Nicholas Kyros June 27, 1923 - May 13, 2009 SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- George Kyros served in General Patton's Third Army in Europe. He always spoke of being in armored reconnaissance, which meant a small jeep, two men and a fifty-caliber machine gun in advance position. While fighting in Europe he sustained injuries. After the war, George worked for the U.S Post Office where he had some interesting adventures. At one time, while on his special delivery route, a young mother called to him and he saved the life of an infant who was choking. George was a loving and generous man. He was widely known for his humor, compassion and friendliness. Earthly goods were not important to George, what mattered most to him were his children, friends and his pets. George graduated from Portland High in 1943. In the summer of 1942 he worked for Todd-Bath Shipyard building Liberty ships. Regardless of where his travels took him, his heart always remained true to his love of the beauty of Maine. George is survived by his two daughters; grandchildren; great-grandson; and his brother Peter Kyros, former congressman of the first district of Maine. His children were by his side when he passed in San Diego, Calif. He is predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Joanna Kyros who lived at Shepley Street. The family wishes to thank the U.S. Veteran's Administration for their outstanding care for George.
