ALEXANDRIA — John H. McSween, 76, a well-known attorney and former president of Rapides Savings & Loan Association, died Sunday at an Alexandria hospital after a short illness.

He was the father of former U.S. Rep. Harold McSween.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at John Kramer & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park.

A native of Caldwell Parish where he attended school, McSween was a graduate of Soule College at New Orleans and was a court reporter at Jena before serving in the Army in World War I.

After the war, he worked as a law clerk in the Alexandria firm of John H. Overton, a former U.S. senator, and John R. Hunter Sr. He was admitted to law practice in 1927 after reading law in the firm and passing the bar examinations.

McSween had served on the board of governors of the Louisiana State Bar Association from 1936-40 and was Alexandria city attorney from 1934-40. He was also a former president of the Alexandria Bar Association.

At the time of his death, McSween was the senior partner in the law firm of McSween and Brook.

He had been a director of Rapides Savings & Loan Association since 1933 and president of the association from 1945 until 1965.

He was a charter member of George M. Simmons American Legion Post and was a Master Mason. He was chairman of the advisory committee for registrants of Draft Board No. 2.

McSween was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Besides his son, he is survived by two brothers, a sister and four grandchildren.
