Pennsylvania Governor, U.S. Senator. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, served as brigade inspector in the Pennsylvania State Militia, studied law; admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Franklinton, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1797, 1804-07) and Pennsylvania State Treasurer, (1807-17). In 1817, he was elected as a Democratic Republican, the 4th Governor of Pennsylvania, serving until 1820. After his term, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the failure of the legislature to elect and served (1821-27). Not a candidate for reelection, he was chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and President Andrew Jackson appointed him Treasurer of the United States Mint, serving (1830-41). Note: the grave stone gives the imcorrect date of death as November 15, 1846.
