US Senator, New Hampshire Governor. While serving as a Baptist exhorter, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1787 and commenced to practice law in Epping, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives (1785-86, 1788, 1790-91, 1797-1800) and a member of the New Hampshire State constitutional conventions, (1791-92). In 1802, he was elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James Sheafe, serving until 1807. Not a candidate for reelection, he was President of the New Hampshire State Senate, (1810-11). In 1812, he was elected as a Jeffersonian Republican the 7th Governor of New Hampshire, serving (1812-13, 1816-19). After his last term, he retired from public life, engaged in literary pursuits, was one of the founders and the first president of the New Hampshire Historical Society. He died on his estate at age 91.
