According to the JW Lewis History of Rockingham (p. 231), the Spring after marrying Betsy Plumer on Sept. 19, 1824 he moved to a farm of 60 acres, which he expanded to 200 acres. (Not sure where this was?) Because in Dec. 1837 he "removed to Epping" built his home, and retired there. He also owned land in Illinois and Iowa. He was active politically. He was described as large, both mentally and physically. He and his wife Betsy had 3 children:

- George W. Plumer (died July 11, 1881, age 54)
- Sarah E. (Mrs. F.V. Noyes of Billerica, MA)
- Catherine J. (Mrs. James B. Pierson of Epping)
