US Congressman. The son of Governor and US Senator William Plumer, the younger Plumer graduated from Harvard in 1809, and in 1812 began practicing law in Epping. From 1816 to 1817 he was US Loan Commissioner for New Hampshire, and in 1818 served in the state House of Representatives. Later in 1818 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican. He served three terms, 1819 to 1825, and was Chairman of the Judiciary Commitee in his second term. Plumer served in the New Hampshire Senate from 1827 to 1828. In 1827 he was appointed New Hampshire's US Attorney, but declined to serve. In 1850 he was a Delegate to the state Constitutional convention. He was a longtime member of the Board of Trustees of the New Hampshire Asylum for the Insane, and was active in the New Hampshire Historical Society. In retirement Plumer wrote poetry, much of which he circulated to friends, but some of which was later published. He also wrote a biography of his father, "Life of William Plumer."
