Alabama Governor. After his service in the U.S. Merchant Marines, (1930-33), he was educated the University of Alabama, Howard College and George Washington University. He then worked for the Emergency and Aid Insurance Company, (1937-46) and also served briefly in the U.S. Marines. In November 1946, he was elected as a Democrat the 45th Governor of Alabama, serving until 1959. During his two terms, funding was increased to aid education, highway construction and old age pensions were issued. Segregation was declared unconstitutional in hotels and on intrastate buses by the Federal courts and hundreds of miles of farm-to-market roads were constructed throughout the state. After leaving office, he returned to his insurance business interests.
