Mrs. Emerson C. Harrington To Be Buried Tomorrow
Cambridge, Md. April 8 [Special]-Mrs. Emerson C. Harrington widow, of the former Governor of Maryland, died late today at Cambridge Hospital after a brief illness. Her husband, who was governor from 1916 to 1920, died in December, 1945. He was 81. Mrs. Harrington, the former Miss Mary Gertrude Johnson, of Cambridge, was married to the future governor on June 27, 1893, while he was a high-school principal. Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Saturday at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church here. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery beside her husband.
Two Sons And Daughters Survive
She is survived by two sons, Emerson C. Harrington, Jr., and William J. Harrington; a daughter, Mrs. Reginald V. Truitt, wife of the director of the Maryland Department of Research and Education; a sister, Mrs. Mattie J. Geoghegan. After serving as Maryland's governor during World War I, the late Mr. Harrington returned to his home in Cambridge for a long and active business and legal career. Important steps undertaken during his term as Governor included the institution of the executive budget, the adoption of a State parole system, creation of the State Law Department, formation of the Conservation Commission and the organization of the Annapolis-Claiborne Ferry System.
