Services for Mary Virginia Harrington Truitt, who was active in organizations in College Park and on the Eastern Shore, will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge. Mrs. Truitt, who was 89, died Wednesday at her home in Stevensville of complications from surgery. She was a former director of Eastern Shore District 1 of the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, a member and former president of the Queen Anne's Garden Club and a member of the Paint Branch Garden Club in College Park. She lived in College Park from 1930 until 1952. She had been a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Stevensville as well as the Cambridge church. In College Park, she had been a member of the Progress Club and the Hospital Guild of the former Prince George's General Hospital. She was also an adult leader of the Girl Scouts. Mrs. Truitt had been a member of the Maryland Historical Society, the Kent Island Heritage Society, and the historical societies of Calvert, Charles, Dorchester and Worcester counties. In addition, she was a member of the Dorset Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Cambridge native was the daughter of Gertrude Johnson Harrington and Emerson C. Harrington, a former governor of Maryland. She was educated at the Cambridge Academy and the National Cathedral School in Washington. Her husband, Dr. Reginald Van Trump Truitt, died in April. He was a former University of Maryland professor and founded the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. She is survived by two daughters, Gertrude T. Guthrie of Stevensville and Dr. Virginia T. Sherr of Holland, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
