35th Maryland Governor, US Senator, Baltimore Mayor. He served as a Democratic Senator from Maryland to the United States Senate on three separate occasions. First appointed in July 1868 to fill the remaining term of Reverdy Johnson, who had resigned, he served until March 1869, and declined to be a candidate for the seat. He was then elected as Maryland's 35th Governor, in 1872, and when his Governorship was halfway through in 1874 he was elected again to the United States Senate. Resigning as Governor in March 1875 to assume the Senate seat, he served until 1881. He again chose not to run for re-election, partial due to conflict with Maryland's other Senator, Arthur P. Gorman, and later in 1881 he was elected unopposed as Mayor of the city of Baltimore, Maryland. After serving two years, he returned to private law practice, but in 1887 was elected as Maryland's Attorney General, a post he held until 1891. In June 1906 Senator Gorman died in office, and William Pinkney Whyte was appointed to fill the vacancy, becoming a United States Senator for a third time and establishing a still-standing record for time in between Senate terms (25 years, 3 months, 5 days). He was still in office when he died unexpectedly in Baltimore at age 83 in 1908.
