Montana Governor. Educated at Montana State University, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and established his legal career in Butte, Montana. He was counsel for the Montana Highway Commission, (1929-36) and attorney for the Railroad and Public Service Commission, (1936-40). Entering politics, he served as Montana Attorney General, (1941-42). During World War II, he served as a Colonel in the U.S.Army and was decorated for his actions in Europe. After the war, he was elected as a Democratic the 13th Governor of Montana, serving (1949-43). During his tenure, highway construction was advanced, the pioneer veterans memorial building was initiated, the department of labor, industry and agriculture was restructured. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and a justice on the Montana State Supreme Court from 1968, until his death at age 67 in Helena, Montana.
