An obituary for Gustaf Sanfrid Johnson was published in the Mille Lacs County Times on the 15th October 1931. It reads:

COUNTY PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH

Gustaf Sanfrid Johnson Passed Away at His Home in Milaca Oct. 9 After Long Illness

Another of the pioneers of central Mille Lacs county passed to his eternal reward when Gustaf Sanfrid Johnson of Milaca died at his home here last Friday, October 9th. The cause of death was uremia and Mr. Johnson had been bedridden for the past year.

Gustaf Sanfrid Johnson was born at Skaraborgs Lan, Sweden, on April 1, 1953. He grew to manhood in that country and was united in marriage to Anna Louisa (did they mean Lovisa?) Carlson there on August 9, 1878. They came to the United States in the year 1886 and located at Upland, Nebraska, where they lived on a farm until the year 1901 when they moved to Mille Lacs county and located on a farm in Milo township. Here they developed a fine farm there, and 22 years ago they moved to Milaca to reside.

Besides his wife the deceased is survived by seven children as follows: Mrs. Albin Odberg, or Kettle River, Erlan S. Johnson of Osseo, Rev. Carl G. Johnson, of Allerton, Iowa, Mrs. W.W. Barrett, of Great Falls, Montl., Mrs. D.J. Lundholm, Mrs. David Sahlstrom and Mrs. Arvid Anderson of Milaca. There are also 33 grandchildren.

The funeral services were held last Monday afternoon at the home at 2 o'clock and at the Milaca Baptist church at 2:30 p.m. The services were conducted by Rev. C.O. Dahlen and Rev. C.O. Sahlstrom. Both paid high tributes to this sturdy pioneer, and his high Christian character. The church was filled with relatives and friends who joined in the final tribute to this worthy citizen. Interment was made in the family lot in Forest Hill Cemetery.
