Baptist Minister Dies At Age 74
Rev. Carl Gustaf Johnson, 74, for more than 50 years a Baptist minister, died about 5 a.m. Saturday at his home, 915 Acres.
The Rev. Mr. Johnson retired in 1952, but recently had been serving as non-denominational minister at West Burlington, Latty, Rome and Lockridge.
Last week he was re-elected secretary-treasurer of Des Moines County Ministerial association. Rev. Johnson was a past president of that organization.
Born Jan. 11, 1885, at Timmersdala, Sweden, he was the son of Gust A. and Louise Sandell Johnson. He was a graduate of Bethel college in Minnesota and the old Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago, Ill. Johnson was a member of the American Baptist Convention, a Mason, served as an army chaplain during World War I, and was a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, C. Donald Johnson, Sheridan, Wyo., and J.O. Johnson, Burlington; four daughters, Mrs. Mathilda Tyler, Petersburg, Mich.; Mrs. Dorothy Norton, Orion, Ill.; Mrs. Juanita Rickey, Colona, Ill, and Mrs. Barbara Upton, Burlington; 20 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Barrett of Montana; Mrs. Tilda Anderson, Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Ellen Odberg, St. Paul, Minn.
His parents, three brothers and one sister are dead.
Services will be at 2 p.m. at First Baptist church, the Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park. The body will be taken from Wallen's to the church at 10 a.m. Monday, to lie in state until time for services.
