Nicholas Jackson Mainer was the son of John Reames Mainer and Eugenia (Buller) Mainer. He was born in Rapides Parish, Louisiana and moved with his family to Colita in Polk County, Texas when he was two years old. He was a young boy when the Civil War broke out, but he enlisted in the militia in J. W. Dunnam's Company. Later reinlisted in Company D, 1st Regiment Cavalry, Terry's State Troops.

He married Ella Nelms on 11 Sept 1872. Nick Mainer operated a business in Lovelady with L. P. Nelms, his brother-in-law.
