Death notice from The Roanoke Leader, March 15, 1916:
THE SAD DEATH OF MRS. HEFLIN Caused Widespread Regret Among Many Friends;
Burial in LaFayette
When the news spread over the wires last Thursday morning that Mrs. J. Thomas Heflin had died Wednesday night of heart trouble, regret and sympathy were everywhere expressed; regret that a life so lovely, so useful, should be cut off in its prime; sympathy for the husband and little son and the many relatives sorely bereaved.
Mrs. Heflin had not been in good health for many months, and recently came home from Washington that she might continue her labors as long as permitted among her home people in LaFayette. But so suddenly the summons came that the husband could not reach home before the gentle spirit of her whom he loved had fled.
From friends far and near, some of them in high station, came messages of sympathy. President Wilson wired as follows: "My heart goes out to you in profound sympathy in your tragic loss. May God help and sustain you." Many beautiful floral tributes bore mute testimony to the love and sympathy of friends. From various points came representative citizens in person to pay their tributes. A large delegation from Roanoke attended the funeral services Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
