US Congressman. He served in the Merchant Marine and the US Naval Reserve from 1944 to 1946 and received a law degree from Louisiana State University in 1950. He became an attorney in Alexandria and also served as President of the Rapides Savings and Loan Association. From 1955 to 1956 he served on the Rapides Parish School Board, and he was a member of the Louisiana State Board of Education from 1957 to 1958. In 1958 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served two terms, 1959 to 1963. He was a Delegate to the 1960 Democratic national convention. McSween was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1962, afterwards resuming his law practice and business interests and becoming a widely published writer of history, fiction, poetry, and critical essays in the Southern Quarterly Review, the Virginia Quarterly Review and other publications.
