On October 14, in the early morning hours, Walter Martin Schlichting passed from this life into the next. He was 95 years old.
Born September 21, 1926 to Jacob and Justine Schlichting of Corn, Oklahoma, he was their 6th of seven children, all of whom have preceded him in death. Walter graduated from Weatherford High School in Weatherford OK. He remained on the family wheat farm for three years before attending Tabor college in Hillsboro KS, where he met his lifelong partner and sweetheart, Rosalie Harder. After he graduated from Oklahoma State in Normal in 1950, they married and moved to St. Paul MN where he attended St Paul Bible School. He pastored a church in Larslan, MT, for five years, still actively helping his parishioners during wheat harvest and spring planting . In 1957. Walter and Rosalie moved their growing family to Hillsboro KS where Walter worked as a translator at the Mennonite Brethren Publishing House.
Walter was an inquisitive child who enjoyed making things. As a youngster he made many toys for himself and his siblings. That love of making was a part of his whole life, as he spent many hours doing home improvement projects for hire. In his lifetime, he built three churches and two parsonages. He maintained an active woodworking hobby shop until he was in his 90's.
In 1962, the family moved to Milford Kansas, where Walter ministered in two congregational churches preaching two sermons every Sunday.
As Walter and Rosalie's family grew, they continued to find ways to enrich their children's lives with music lessons, boating, horses, interesting vacations, and always reading. Walter was a lifelong blood donor, giving more than 60 pints in his lifetime. He enjoyed finding ways to give back to his community. In 1982, Walter took a pastorate in St Elmo MN. He pastored there for 15 years. In 1997, Walter and Rosalie moved to Van TX to work for their beloved Mercy Ships Ministries. In retirement, they continued to serve on mission teams and traveled the world. Together they enjoyed their church, the church choir where they sang many duets, as well as gardening and reading to each other. Their faith was the bedrock of their lives.
His wife of 60 years, Rosalie, and his son-in-law Carroll Johnson preceded Walter in death. He is survived by all five of his children: Margaret Phillips( and husband Dickie), Barbara Neighbors, (Scott) Kaye Linda Johnson-Parker (Rob) Warren Schilichting (Ladan) Jeffrey Schlichting (Leigh). He was grandfather to 16 grandchildren from oldest to youngest: Bill Phillips, Derek Phillips, Tucker Neighbors, Katie Johnson, Toby Neighbors, Corey Andrews, Tara Neighbors, Ryne Phillips, Tessa Neighbors, Kip Johnson, Carter Phillips, Jasmine Schlichting, Nicole Schlichting, Sam Schlichting, Emma Schlichting, and Zach Schlichting. He had 11 great grand children.
A memorial service will be held at Van United Methodist Church on Sunday October 24th, at 2:00 pm. A Celebration of life that will include the extended family will be held in the spring. Memorials may be made in Walter's name to Mercy Ships International.
