Capt. John Posey was born abt 11 Oct 1711 and died abt 19 May 1778 at the home of his son Wm Posey Sr. in E. Coventry Twp., Chester Co., PA. He had moved there from Rover's Delight at Ferry Point, Fairfax Co., VA where he was the ferry operator between Fairfax Co., VA (just southwest of Mt. Vernon) and Marshall Landing, MD from 1752 until his sale to Geo. Washington in 1772. He was a friend, business associate, and hunting partner of Geo. Washington, eventually selling virtually all of his estate to him to repay loans from Washington.
Despite family history and his family being buried near him in this cemetery, the cemetery will not allow a newer stone to be added to this grave without some documentary evidence that Capt. John is buried in this cemetery. Unfortunately, death certificates did not exist in 1778 and an obituary has not yet been located.
