Attorney at Law. The son of United States Senator Cornelius and Olive (Colegrove) Cole, he was a boyhood friend of Jesse Grant, the son of President Ulysses S. Grant. He attended Cornell University, class of 1878, and Hastings Law College of San Francisco in 1879. Admitted to the bar of California in 1884, he served as United States Attorney for the Southern District of California, appointed by President Benjamin Harrison in 1889, and serving one term until 1891. After leaving that position he continued to practice law in partnership with his father in the law office of Cole & Cole. Willoughby Avenue in the area of Hollywood once known as Colegrove is named in his honor. Husband of Geraldine (Fitzgerald) Cole, they married in 1904 and were the parents of Willoughby Cole, Jr.
