Military Figure. José Ruperto Martínez Lozano was a member of the local police at the age of 24, and that same year he joined the forces of Santiago Vidaurri who took up arms against Antonio López de Santa Anna. In 1863 he joined the National Guard and was appointed captain of the Higueras corps. He was appointed military commander of Villa Progreso in Coahuila, and the following year he joined the forces of General Mariano Escobedo. In 1865 he participated in the battle of Monterrey, where the Republicans were defeated by the French. A few months later, Martínez regained the plaza, which earned him promotion to lieutenant colonel. In March 1866 he participated in the battle of Santa Isabel. He was present at the siege of Querétaro and, after the surrender of Emperor Maximilian, he was promoted to colonel.
