His wife and children had returned to Richland, Michigan, where his father, Simeon Mills, lived. Then after his return both families moved to Buchanan County, Iowa but later all returned to Michigan.
Herbert Leslie Mills went into the Union Army in 1861 in Company L 1st Iowa Calvary and went to Michigan at close of war. Then he went to Brookfield (Mar 1866) near Eaton Rapids where the family lived.
