10th Missouri Governor, US Congressman. Trained as a lawyer and admitted to the bar in 1822, he served as a colonel in the Black Hawk War. He served two one-year terms as a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives in 1834 and 1836, and was elected as Governor of Missouri, serving from 1848 to 1853. After serving as a delegate to Democratic National Convention 1860, he was elected as a Unionist to represent Missouri's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving a single term from March 4, 1863 to March 3, 1865. He was defeated for re-election to the seat by Congressman Robert T. Van Horn, and returned to his private law practice. He passed away in St. Louis, Missouri in 1870.
