Young Henry's father, Maj. Benjamin Kendrick Pierce, was the Commander of Fort Delaware. During Maj. Pierce's tenure, the fort was garrisoned by Companies A and B, 4th U.S. Artillery. Major Pierce was a graduate of Dartmouth College and the older brother to the 14th President of the United States, Franklin Pierce.
