U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Born the son of a successful tobacco planter, he served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he studied law at the College of New Jersey and practiced law in Warren County, North Carolina. Entering politics, he served in the North Carolina State Senate, (1781-82, 84). In 1791, he was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Second Congress and to the next twelve succeeding Congresses, serving until 1815, when he resigned. In 1815, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the U.S. Senate, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Francis Locke and reelected serving until his resignation, in 1828. After leaving the Senate, he was president of the North Carolina State constitutional convention, in 1835 and was a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket, in 1836. Macon Georgia, is named in his honor.
