Adelaide (as she was apparently known) married John in the District of Columbia in 1857.

Her father was a United States Senator from Illinois (1837-43); a justice on the Illinois Supreme Court; and was presiding judge at the 1844 trial of the men accused of murdering Mormon leader Joseph Smith.
