Matilda was the daughter of Judge William James, of St. Genevieve County, Missouri.

Matilda married Hon. Richard Montgomery Young (20 Feb 1798 - 28 Nov 1861) on 25 June 1820.

Obituary for Richard: "In this city, yesterday evening at half past 7 o'clock, Hon. Richard M. Young, formerly of Illinois but for many years a resident of this city. His friends and those of the family are requested to attend his funeral tomorrow at 2 o'clock from the residence of his brother, Col. Colby Young, No. 5, Maine ave., Island."

Obituary for Matilda: "The funeral of Matilda Young will take place at 3 o'clock tomorrow, February 2 from her residence, 316 C street. The friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend."
