John was the son of Capt. Wanton Ellsworth and Sabra Stewart. He was brother to Samuel Stewart Ellsworth. John was born in Pownal Vermont and came to Yates County in 1819.
He served as clerk for George D. and Samuel Stewart, with whom he removed to Bethel and remained there a number of years. He married his wife Eliza Andrews in Bethel, which now is called Gorham. They returned to Penn Yan in 1838 and resided there until their deaths. Their son John Ellsworth, Jr. was killed in the Civil War.
