US Senator. Educated at Butler University, he served with the Indianapolis Journal as reporter, editor, part owner and publisher, (1878-1903). He was a member of the Indiana State Senate (1896-1900) and a member of the Republican National Committee, (1900-12). He was a Captain and assistant adjutant general in the 7th Army Corps during the Spanish-American War and after the war, he engaged in the stone quarrying and construction business. In 1917, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1923. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed Postmaster General in the Cabinet of President Warren Harding, reappointed by President Calvin Coolidge and served until 1929. Residing in Washington, D.C., he was US Commissioner, Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, in 1933. He died at age 78 in Baltimore, Maryland.
