Even though Harry used the surname of Clancy at times, his mother did not marry James Clancey until 1897 when he was 11 years old. His mother claimed he was the illegitimate son of Indiana Senator Harry New who was a married man. Senator New denied throughout his lifetime the affair with Lillie Mae as well as being Harry's father.
