U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. After graduating from Oklahoma Baptist University, he was a teacher in the public schools of Rocky, Oklahoma (1911 to 1913), a teacher of public speaking at Oklahoma Baptist University (1913 to 1915), and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1917. During World War I, he served overseas as a Private 1st Class in the 135th Infantry, 34th Division, U.S. Army (1917 to 1918). After the war, he was head of the public speaking department of the University of Oklahoma, graduated from Columbia University in 1924, earned a law degree from Cumberland University in 1925, practiced law, and operated a farm in Norman, Oklahoma. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth Congress, serving from 1935 to 1937, and elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving from 1937 to 1943. Unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the Civil Aeronautics Board 1943 to 1955. Retiring from politics, he resumed the practice of law and operated his farm until his death.
