Arvilla Batchelder Hitchcock was born in West Remmey, N.H., Nov 3, 1841, died in Clarinda, Ia., Feb 11, 1911, aged 69 years 3 months and 7 days. At the age of 9 years her father, with his family, emigrated to Langworth, Jones county, Ia., which was then the far west. More than three weeks were spent in making this journey, coming by way of the Erie canal around the Great Lakes, by stage coach, and other pioneer modes of travel, passing through Chicago and Dubuque, which were only small villages. She was the youngest of twelve children, all having passed away from this earth except two sisters, Mrs Hannah Kline of Los Angeles, Calif, and Mrs Robert Reed of Clarinda. In 1861 she was united in married to Leonard Hitchcock, who preceded her to the better world eight years ago lacking one month. To this union were born nine children, two dying in early infancy, two--a pair of twins--at the age of 4 years, and Laura M., who was called away at the age of 18 years. Those surviving her are Mrs Thomas Irwin and J.H. Hitchcock of this city, Mrs Elnora Merriam of Morrison, Colo., and J.Scott Hitchcock of Colorado. A remarkable coincidence of this sad occasion was that the same friends acted as pallbearers for both Father and Mother Hitchcock. They were the four Reed brothers who were nephews, and J.S. Harvison and William Irwin. Mother Hitchcock's death was a great shock to her family and friends. She had been indisposed for two weeks with la grippe, but her condition did not develop into critical symptoms until the evening previous to her death. She united with the Presbyterian church of East Wayne, Jones county, Ia.; in early womanhood, but that congregation disorganizing because of removals she with her family joined the Scotch Grove United Presbyterian church of the same neighborhood. In 1861 she was united in married to Leonard Hitchcock who passed to the better world eight years ago, lacking one month. It can be truly said that a mother in Israel has gone from us as her's was a beautiful Christian life, wholly devoted to her church and family. Her whole trust was in Christ, her friend. Death had no terror for her. When was was told by her physician that the end was near, she said, "I am ready to go." "I am so glad." She asked for the reading of the Ninety-first Psalm, also asked her children to repeat with her the Twenty-third Psalm. She will be greatly missed by her loving influence will remain with her loved ones as long as they live, and all who knew her thank God for the beautiful life she lived among them. The many beautiful flowers bore silent testimony of the love and esteem in which she was held by her many friends as she now sleeps the sleep of the just.
